Yoga Therapy

What is a Yoga Therapist?

A Certified Yoga Therapist is not the same as a Yoga Teacher, although she is highly trained in yoga. She is a specially trained professional who dedicates 3 or more years and a minimum of 800 hours of training beyond any prior training, for this certification. We are trained in therapeutic relationship, group communication, listening skills, deep training in specialties such as functional yoga therapy including physical assessment, ROM studies, neurological disorders, cancer, grief, anxiety, depression, in addition to advanced training in foundational yoga philosophies, practices and traditions. A Certified Yoga Therapist has achieved the highest certification in the field having met the standards set by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT).

Yoga Therapists have in-depth training to assess their clients and keep them safe.
"IAYT supports research and education in yoga and serves as a professional organization for yoga teachers and yoga therapists worldwide." Yoga Therapy offers a holistic approach to wellbeing. "The yogic model of health is unique because it addresses every aspect of life rather than considering each body part or system separately. Yoga Therapy is a safe way of working with the natural capacity of your body and mind to optimize your well-being. A Yoga Therapy session is tailored to your individual needs." ~ Yoga Therapy.Health

What Is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is the epitome of Mind Body Medicine which The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says is a field that "uses a variety of techniques designed to enhance the mind's capacity to affect bodily function and symptoms." Yoga Therapy is not psychotherapy or physical therapy. Yoga Therapy complements both of these and other healing modalities. It is a great option used in conjunction with traditional mainstream Western medical treatments, Ayurvedic or Eastern Medicine. Yoga Therapy is an emerging field of which I am one of only about 6000 yoga therapists worldwide. Read more about yoga therapy here: www.iayt.org/

Individual Yoga Therapy Sessions

An individual Yoga Therapy session includes a comprehensive, confidential intake and a complete assessment to determine which yoga practices will be best for you. The intake and assessment outline your needs and goals based on your health history, lifestyle, available time and current routine. Together we create a plan to meet your goals, a flexible and open-ended plan allowing for modifications and updated goals to maintain your optimal health and well-being. Almost all individual Yoga Therapy sessions include homework for self-practice. No prior yoga experience is required.

Often just a few sessions can revitalize, reenergize and redirect you to better health.

There is no "one size fits all" in Yoga Therapy.  Yoga Therapy is customized to be beneficial for people who can't move at all as well as active individuals. Yoga Therapy can help with:
  • Stress Management
  • Balance and Strength
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Chronic Pain
  • Postural Improvement
  • Healthy Aging
  • Injury Recovery and Prevention
  • Surgery Recovery
  • Cancer Management: From Diagnosis to Post Treatment Recovery
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Grief
For example: Individual sessions to manage chronic pain may include breathing techniques to restore energy, visualization, reeducation in movement patterns. Post injury sessions could include a plan for endurance and musculoskeletal strengthening. Individual sessions for cancer management may include stress management options as well as physical movement and breathing techniques for vitality.

Small Group Yoga Therapy

Small Group Yoga Therapy classes and workshops are centered around a health condition or topic. General education on the topic is provided including physical movements, breathing mechanics, relaxation techniques. All movement and breathing techniques, mudras and visualizations are guided with information about contraindications and modifications. Since Yoga Therapy is holistic, considering every aspect of wellbeing: physical, energetic, mental, psycho/emotional, and our deep connection to wholeness, a yoga therapy workshop contains practices for all levels of our being.  Previous yoga experience is not necessary.

Even in a small group of breast cancer survivors, medical treatment, lifestyle, personal philosophies/spirituality, etc., will make each person's goals unique. General commonalities may pertain to the group, but each participant will have individual goals and outcomes. Along with education, a Yoga Therapy workshop includes appropriate movements for the physical body, energetic guidance through breathing techniques (pranayama) or mudras, tools for mental/emotional wellbeing, and meditations for finding balance and ease in our lives.

Workshops may include sharing, journaling and take-home materials to aid in self-practice.
